Libary Renaet Braem Schoten_DMT Architects_ 2020-2022
Schoten Belgium
Restoration of a classified library designed by architect R. Braem (1969-1976).
The library of Schoten is the youngest classified monument in Flanders. It is a striking example of the period in Renaat Braem's oeuvre, during which he uses a distinctly organic formal language, following trends that began to criticize the dogmas of modernism.
Renaat Braem (1910–2001) was one of the most important Belgian modernist architects of the twentieth century. He worked not only as an architect and urban planner, but also viewed architecture as a means of improving society and providing people with better living conditions.
In 1936–1937, he completed an internship at Le Corbusier’s (1887–1965) atelier in Paris. Several Belgian heritage sources describe him as the only Belgian to have undertaken an internship there.
