Jan Goderis designer & interior architect
Jan Goderis is a Belgium-based designer whose work spans architecture, interior design, furniture, lighting and object design. With more than 35 years of professional experience, he explores the relationship between form, material, craftsmanship and contemporary production technologies, creating designs that combine conceptual clarity, refined detailing and a distinctive character.
In 2021, he founded Jan Goderis Design Lab to focus on the creation and development of distinctive design projects. His multidisciplinary career includes private residences, public spaces and cultural heritage restorations, notably the renovation of the historic Godfried warehouse in Antwerp, realised with DMT Architects for the offices of fashion designer Dries Van Noten.
Today, his practice focuses on timeless furniture, lighting and objects that balance aesthetics, functionality and material integrity. Ecology and circularity are integral to his design philosophy, informing his exploration of innovative materials, responsible production methods and local manufacturing opportunities. Durability, repairability, ergonomics and timeless aesthetics are essential considerations, with the aim of creating high-quality products that remain relevant and valued across generations.
Since founding his Design Lab, Jan has received more than 35 international design awards, including distinctions from the A' Design Award, LIT Lighting Design Awards, Prize Designs for Modern Furniture + Lighting, International Design Awards (IDA) and Good Design Award. His work, including the Japan Chair, SOLID Table Light and BEND Coffee Table, has also gained international visibility through exhibitions and publications, including presentations associated with the MOOD Museum in Como, Italy.
Alongside his design practice, Jan contributes to the international design community as a jury member for the LIT Lighting Design Awards in 2025 and 2026, and the Prize Designs for Modern Furniture + Lighting®. In 2025, he was also recognised by the Designers Accreditation Council (DAC) among leading designers internationally.
Through Jan Goderis Design Lab, he continues to develop distinctive, enduring designs that bring together thoughtful form, material exploration and responsible production, fostering a lasting relationship between objects, their environment and the people who use them.
sustainable design
Ecology and circularity are integral to the design process. Driven by a continuous interest in new materials and innovative production technologies, the aim is to explore opportunities to reduce the environmental impact of products while enhancing their quality and value in use.
Local and socially responsible production, combined with the considered selection of materials, plays an important role in this approach. By focusing on locally available resources, manufacturing processes and production partners, design can contribute to strengthening the local economy, reducing transport distances and limiting dependence on global supply chains in which human rights and working conditions are not always guaranteed.
These principles translate into products in which sustainability goes beyond material selection or manufacturing methods alone. Ergonomics, durability, aesthetics, ease of use and repairability are equally integral to the design process. The ambition is to create high-quality products that are relevant and functional not only today, but also in the long term.
Timeless design, allowing products to integrate naturally into a variety of interiors, supports this long-term vision. By creating products that adapt to changing needs and can be used across generations, a lasting relationship can develop between an object and its user. In this way, sustainability becomes more than a technical or environmental characteristic; it becomes an essential part of design quality itself.
